Mint Pictures has celebrated its one-year anniversary since it became independent of North One TV with news that Bushwhacked! – the kids TV format it created for ABC3 – is now screening in more than 44 countries across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and Australia.
Ahead of MIP TV last week, series 2 of the wildlife-meets-indigenous culture adventure series was sold to Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific. It had already been sold to Super RTL (Germany) before it had aired in Australia.
Series I was also sold to Discovery and Super RTL, as well as Middle East Media (Jordan), Insular Challenge for Radio Television (Brunei) and Qantas In-Flight Entertainment.
“It’s been a huge challenge to produce a kids’ series filmed largely in remote Aboriginal Australia but also hugely rewarding, especially since it’s become a hit overseas,” said Dan Goldberg, the executive producer of the series.
Mint Pictures has also just delivered Brilliant Creatures: Germaine, Clive, Barry & Bob to ABC1 and BBC4 – a two-part series hosted by Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson, who sets off on a voyage of discovery from London to New York to Sydney and Melbourne to reveal why Clive James, Germaine Greer, Barry Humphries and Robert Hughes left Australia in the late 50s and early 60s and how they managed to become such icons and iconoclasts in the cultural kingdoms of the West.
A one-hour documentary for ABC1 on the child sexual abuse scandal inside a fervently Orthodox Jewish sect in Melbourne is close to completion.
In its sport and entertainment department, Mint has produced numerous programming for the Nine Network including Breaking the Beat, a two-part series with Red Bull Media House to find the world’s best B-Boy and Wildcard, which followed four young female surfers attempting to win a wildcard into the Australian Open of Surfing in Manly, as well as a live OB for Surfing Australia and Fuel TV of the inaugural Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle at Cronulla Beach in January.
It is currently in production on Red Bull Cape Fear, a live OB and documentary of a big wave surfing event outside of Sydney, and an exciting new six-part series for Foxtel, which will be revealed shortly.
Managing Director, Adam Kay said, “These two new productions, in addition to Bushwhacked! and the other documentaries, demonstrates the diversity and ability of Mint Pictures to produce kids, factual, sport and entertainment programs. Our first year as Mint Pictures has been a huge success and we intend to build on that in the coming year.”
Following the success of Bushwhacked!, Mint is now in formal development on series 3. Bushwhacked! series 1 & 2 (26 x 26 min) is distributed internationally by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and is currently on air on ABC 3 on Fridays at 7:30pm. It has been financed by ABC3, ACTF, Screen NSW, Screen Queensland, ABC Commercial and the Pratt Foundation.
Series I won the silver plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival and series II been selected as a finalist at the prestigious Prix Jeunesse awards in Munich in June.
