‘The Jewish Nazi?’ has won best feature documentary at the Cannes World Film Festival 2023.
The latest Mint Pictures production was selected for the semi-finals and then the finals of the festival in France, before the seven judges named it the winner of the best feature documentary category in December.
‘The Jewish Nazi?’ follows the astonishing story of Alex Kurzem, Hitler’s youngest soldier – a Jewish boy who hid his secret in Australia for almost 50 years before embarking on a rollercoaster ride to uncover his true identity.
It will now compete for the Grand Winner, which will be screened at the Cineum Cannes in June.
The award in Cannes comes on the back of the documentary being shortlisted for Best Feature Documentary by Screen Producers Australia, which will announce the winner at its annual conference in March.
SBS Australia will screen the one-hour version of the feature, titled ‘Hitler’s Jewish Soldier’, in February as part of its premium documentary strand, ‘Australia Uncovered’.
It was directed by Dan Goldberg, written by Jaya Balendra and Dan Goldberg, co-produced by Benjamin Strum and executive produced by Craig Graham and Adam Kay. Mark Middis was the film editor and Nathan Barlow the director of photography.
It was funded by SBS and Screen Australia in association with Screen NSW. Abacus Media is the international distributor.
