Mint Pictures is producing a three-part, prime-time series for the ABC on the centenary of the Archibald Prize, hosted by Rachel Griffiths.

The award-winning actor and arts patron will plunge through 100 years of history on a treasure hunt for the one portrait that she believes reflects the changing face of the nation and will stand the test of time.

“The Archibald prize is a unique window into our national history and identity. On its 100th anniversary I am thrilled to partner with Mint Pictures to explore the sport, the controversy, the celebrity and the art of the annual face-fest that is even more popular now than at its inception,” Griffiths said.

“I have no doubt this celebrity-packed romp will bring as many fans as flock to the prize every year as we explore the changing face of Australia and why we never get tired of looking at our own reflections.”

While Griffiths searches for ‘The One’, the Art Gallery of NSW is searching for 100 portraits for an exhibition to mark the centenary since JF Archibald’s prize was first opened in 1921.

The series, to air as the Art Gallery of NSW celebrates the centenary of Australia’s most popular arts prize in June 2021, was announced at the ABC’s Upfronts.

Finding The Archibald is directed by Ariel White, produced by Lucille Schnierer, written by Dan Goldberg and executive produced by Adam Kay and Rachel Griffiths.

It is funded by the ABC, Screen Australia, Create NSW and Film Victoria.
