Food Fighter, Mint’s first feature documentary, has screened at Parliament House in Canberra.
More than 120 Senators, MPs and parliamentary staff attended Monday evening’s event at which OzHarvest promoted its #FightFoodWaste campaign on the back of the film, which tells the story of the global scandal of food waste.
Among the parliamentarians present were Melissa Price, Nola Marino, Matt Thistlethwaite, Jason Clare, Joel Fitzgibbon, Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg and Shadow Environment Minister Tony Burke.
Prior to the screening, Frydenberg, who appears in the film announcing Australia’s national food waste strategy, told the audience his government was committed to fighting the $20 billion national food waste bill, saying it was an important environmental, social and economic issue.
He also lauded OzHarvest founder Ronni Kahn, the protagonist in the film, who has spearheaded the campaign to fight food waste since she founded the food rescue charity in 2004 .
For her part, Kahn urged the government to invest more resources and money into the cause, taking up where she left off in the film after she was underwhelmed by Frydenberg’s 2017 pledge of $1.37 million over two years to fight food waste.
Food Fighter premiered in Sydney on June 3 at the State Theatre, and has toured Australia at festivals as well as a national release via Event Cinemas and Village Roadshow.
It won the Social Impact Award at the Show For A Change Festival in Los Angeles and two awards at the 2018 Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards – for best direction and best feature.
Food Fighter was directed and produced by Dan Goldberg, and executive produced by Simon Nasht and Adam Kay.
It was funded by Screen Australia, as well as private philanthropy via Documentary Australia Foundation. Foxtel will air the TV hour later this year. Flame is distributing the TV hour internationally. Fan-Force is licensing the film for community and corporate screenings.
