MINT PICTURES GAW S2 SBS TALENT ESCALATOR POSITION

SBS and MINT PICTURES are searching for an EDIT ASSISTANT / POST PRODUCTION ASSISTANT to work on GREAT AUSTRALIAN WALKS SERIES 2 as part of the SBS Talent Escalator initiative.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The SBS Talent Escalator (‘TE’) is a joint initiative of SBS together with each of Australia’s state and territory screen agencies to co-fund 12 to 16 week placements for emerging to mid-level practitioners from under-represented backgrounds.

This initiative is designed to support practitioners from backgrounds currently under-represented within the Australian screen industry, working directly with production companies on an SBS program.

It is intended to escalate careers by allowing participants to exercise skills that are a level up from their existing level of experience and secure flexible, on-the-job-paid learning and immersion opportunities to work in a collaborative and respectful environment. 

Who can apply for a TE placement? (Eligibility criteria)

The TE is open to TV and film practitioners from under-represented backgrounds who meet the eligibility requirements set out in this section.

In their application cover letters, candidates should state how they meet the eligibility criteria for the TE placement.

For the purposes of this initiative, under-represented includes people who identify with these communities:

  1. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) People who are not Anglo-Celtic or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander by descent, and/or English is not their main spoken language.
  • First Nations peoples People who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • People with disability People with long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory disability or a combination of those conditions. This also includes Deaf or hard of hearing people and people with mental health conditions.
  • LGBTQIA+ People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer. The + represents others not explicitly mentioned such as pansexual, agender and asexual.
  • And intersectionally, people who identify as women

SBS recognises that diversity is also reflected in other ways, including geography (including regional and remote areas), socio-economic mobility, age and carer status. We also encourage the exploration and representation of these communities in our content and initiatives.

Applicants to the Talent Escalator:

  • Must demonstrate the applicant is from a diverse background or an under-represented community;
  • Can demonstrate significant commitment to working in a related technical discipline within the screen industry and mid to long term commitment to career development in the TV and film industry;
  • Must demonstrate previous media industry or television production experience as determined by the Mint Pictures and SBS.
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident;
  • Must be 18 years old or above; and
  • Must not be a full time student.

POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR CURRENT TALENT ESCALATOR ROLE

  3. Location: At the Mint Pictures production office in Balmain, Sydney NSW
  4. Placement Period:

Start: 1st April , 2024

Finish:  5th July, 2024   

Total Weeks: 14 weeks total

How many days per week:  5 days per week

Hours: 9am to 5pm  Note: actual hours may vary.

  • Supervision

During the placement, the participant will be primarily supervised by the SENIOR EDIT ASSISTANT at MINT PICTURES- Issy Harding

The participant will also be able to contact the SBS Content Industry Diversity Manager Michelle Cheng, throughout the placement

  • How will the placement provide a ‘level up’ for participants?

This opportunity will provide participants with the opportunity to extend their existing skill set and gain experience which is a level up from their existing skill set.

This placement will advance the candidates edit assisting skills across ingesting, syncing & grouping and media management together with exposure to some assembly editing. They will be required to assist and service the media needs of each editor finding shots, sourcing sync, exporting sequences and logging vision where required to ensure the efficient edit post schedule meets its deadlines as a team.

They will be across to the management of archive in the edit sequences and delivery recording process.  The candidate will also across the Ep to Ep graphic elements and components of each Ep.

We will also expose the candidate to post production assistant work in relation to offline and online schedules and deliverables to the broadcaster.

The candidate will be supported and managed by the senior edit assistant who will be able to methodically teach, support and mentor processes’ and procedures.

  • Job description/Key tasks and responsibilities  

The Edit Assistant / Post Production Assistant Key roles will revolve around the management and access to rushes and all series media management allowing a smooth workflow for our offline editors. They will be required to source vision or sequences for the editors and trouble shoot and technical issues that arise. In addition, the candidate will be exposed to the understanding and tracking of our offline post production schedule from Ep to Ep from Rough Cut to Fine Cut.

Tasks and responsibilities in more detail:

  • Media management, transcoding rushes in resolve and ingesting into Avid,
  • Syncing and Grouping shoot days
  • Multi cam syncing and management where applicable
  • Archive tracking and management in Avid from source to duration declarations
  • Access to the post production schedule – tracking the key elements of each Ep being the offline cut, Narrations, archive, graphic elements
  • Training objectives and learning goals
  • To be able to work independently to manage media and liaise direct with editors
  • To be able to gain strong trouble shooting and problem solving skills in resolving media based technical issues
  • Have exposure to AVID Nexus file sharing and LTO media back up procedures
  • Learn the process of working with archive, the logging, clip naming, clip resolution checking and conversions, knowing how to retain details so as to link back to supplier of archive and keep proper records 
  • Learn the process of working with graphics, the design and review process and how they are incorporated into the edit
  • Creating inclusive environments
