Mint Pictures took home the silver award at the inaugural AIPS Sports Media Awards in Switzerland this week for ‘John Eales Reveals: The Haka’.

Steve Pasvolsky, who directed the one-hour documentary which aired on the Discovery Channel, collected the award in Lausanne.

‘The Haka’ followed the former Wallabies captain in his bid to make peace with his past, two decades after turning his back on the All Blacks Haka, the greatest pre-match ritual in world sport.

The gold prize went to an Italian production, ‘Mexico 1968: Sport & Revolution’, half a century after sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos stood on the Olympic podium, heads bent, fists clenched in what became an iconic photograph of the 20th century.

The AIPS received 1,273 submissions from 119 countries worldwide, with an 11-member jury determining the winners in each category.

Established in Paris in 1924, AIPS is the peak professional body representing the international sports media, with more than 9,000 members worldwide.

‘The Haka’ was produced by Daniel Whelan and Dan Goldberg with Adam Kay as executive producer.
