Two new documentaries by Mint Pictures will air on SBS this month as part of the network’s Untold Australia season.
The Secret Life of Death will air on August 21 followed by Country Town Pride on August 28; both screen at 8.30pm.
The Secret Life of Death, a co-production with Tangerine Pictures, reveals a sneak peek inside one of the oldest family-run funeral homes in Australia – Walter Carter Funerals, which has been based in Bondi Junction since the 1880s. Told through the eyes of two of its youngest and most recent female recruits – Jasmine Cameron, a funeral director; and Amber Coote, the mortuary manager – this observational documentary lifts the lid on one of the last great taboos: death.
Country Town Pride follows the inspirational story of Holly Conroy, a transgender truck driver, as she bids to stage a Mardi Gras in one of country’s most Christian towns: Wagga Wagga. Holly has to confront priests, politicians, her neighbour and even her own family as she seeks acceptance for the trans community, all the while contuining her process of gender affirmation surgery.
Country Town Pride was produced and directed by Catherine Scott, written by Dan Goldberg, executive produced by Adam Kay, associate produced by Benjamin Strum and narrated by Magda Szubanski.
The Secret Life of Death was narrated by Rachel Griffiths, directed by Dan Goldberg, director of photography was Gary Russell, executive producers were Adam Kay and Gary Russell. Nia Pericles developed both documentaries. They were both funded by SBS, Screen Australia and Create NSW. Flame is distributing both docos.
